Turn It Off and on Again Turn It Off and on Again Gif
I take an excel canvass where I inserted a couple of gifs.
Well, if we insert a GIF every bit usual we get a static motion picture which doesn't play at all.
Make a sample file and insert a gif which plays when the file opens.
I'll take a wait what's actually in your file.
Andreas.

Hullo Andreas,
Thanks for looking into it.
I tried to recreate the behavior, that you had. I could kind of reproduce it and I fabricated two brusque videos showing it:
-
When the excel sheet is opened, merely your mouse focus in on something else, so the gif does not play/loop -> https://1drv.ms/u/s!AkknN7Mp2RdDgQ3yT48ZJX_vqsBq?east=OBbMTL
-
But if y'all klick on the excel sail again or have information technology focused when opening it, then the gif plays/loops -> https://1drv.ms/u/south!AkknN7Mp2RdDgQx1_MlDZQdwoq2k?east=YDd78O
I took all the steps, that you described, and I got the same problem as before. I did a video to show information technology:
https://1drv.ms/u/s!AkknN7Mp2RdDgQ9g086EIEKhaOKD?e=v5bNUV
If you lot want to effort it yourself, this are the steps I took:
I uploaded the gif I used hither:
https://1drv.ms/u/s!AkknN7Mp2RdDgRAeGBUv1YI82SrV?e=aDTPzC
I open an empty excel sheet, the I go to insert -> Image -> from this device and and then I choose the gif.
At present you simply reopen the excel sheet and accept the focus on it

I guess this is a new feature that is not available on my machine.
And then therefore my answer to your question is: No, there is no way to stop GIFs from playing automatically.

Ok, and so my idea for a workaround would be to programme some kind of makro-button, that is linked to the gif. Past pressing the button, y'all simulate a mouse click and make information technology stop.
Would something like this work?

Would something similar this work?
No.
Simulate a mouse click ... possible yes, but for that you need the Windows API. And in in that location you can motility the mouse to screen coordinates (pixels), then trigger an issue to "simulate" a click.
Nosotros can also telephone call a Windows API to become the coordinates in pixels of the main Excel window (the details are a bit diffult, merely it is possible.
The problem is we can not become the screen coordinates of the shape (which includes the GIF) which is placed in the sheet.
A shape has Left and Top backdrop, which returns the distance to the top left of the canvas in points.
Only the meridian left of the sheet is not the elevation left of the Excel window and there is no (safe) way to go the correct distance. There are too many ways to influence the window in Excel ... full screen, freeze panes, dissever view, folio layout view, ...
I suggest you lot make a suggestion here:
Excel · Feedback Portal
Maybe we get an implementation in the Excel Object Model to start/cease a GIF from playing.
